Richard G. Capen, Jr.

Richard Capen's career represents a unique blend of diplomacy and newspaper publishing. For more than thirteen years, Dick served as a director and senior executive at Knight Ridder, Inc., and for seven of those years was publisher of The Miami Herald, which won five Pulitzer Prizes under his leadership. He twice interrupted his newspaper career for service to the federal government: in 1968 he was appointed Deputy Secretary of Defense and Assistant to the Secretary for Legislative Affairs. Then in 1992-93 he served as United States Ambassador to Spain. Noted for his commitment to personal values, and his positive, encouraging approach to life, Dick is a respected columnist, author, and speaker on contemporary trends in America.
