Permissions Request Form

Written permission is necessary if you are writing a book or developing a product that uses material or excerpts from a Zondervan publication. Please download the Permission Request Form and email it to zPermissions [at] zondervan [dot] com.

 

Fair Use of Bibles

These Fair Use Guidelines cover use of text from NIV, NIrV, and Amplified Bible translations. If you are creating a product that uses Bible Scripture/Verses then you must obtain written permission. See the Bible Permissions section below for the Permissions Request Form.

Summary of Fair Use Guidelines (All Must Apply)

  1. No more than 500 verses in total may be reproduced without permission.
  2. Total verses may not make up more than 25% of the work in which they are quoted.
  3. The verses quoted do not amount to a complete book of the Bible.
  4. The verses are not being quoted in a commentary or other biblical reference work.
  5. All Scripture/quotes/excerpts must be properly cited. See citation guidelines in the Bible Permissions section below.

These guidelines cover quotations in written, visual, electronic or audio format.

Works not Covered by Fair Use

  • Reproduction of Zondervan products where the text stands alone such as: artwork, jewelry, gift product, etc. is not permitted without requesting formal permission (fees may apply).
  • Text that does not include appropriate copyright notice (see Copyright Notice section).
  • Use of charts, maps, illustrations, photographs, or cover images is not permitted without requesting formal permission (fees may apply).
  • The Fair Use Guidelines do not apply to Phone Applications, other New Media Platforms (websites, etc.) or Gift Products.

Fair Use for Churches Churches requesting to use a small selection of material for church bulletins, sermons or classroom use that falls within our Fair Use Guidelines, formal written permission is not necessary.

Churches may use stand-alone quotations/scripture in sermons, bulletins, newsletters, or to be shown on a screen (PowerPoint or overhead projector) without asking permission provided the source is accurately cited. See Copyright Notice section below.

Photocopies for Churches Churches may photocopy either one chapter or less than 10% of the total work and up to twenty copies for church use only without asking permission. If more copies are needed, formal written permission is required (fees may apply).

Churches must include copyright notice on each photocopy. If the book is in print and available for purchase this citation must include Zondervan’s website, www.zondervan.com.

Fair Use Guidelines (Products Other than Bibles)

You may quote a text without written permission if the text and new work meet these four Fair Use Guidelines:

Permission for Use of Maps The use of maps from the NIV and NIrV Bibles require formal written permission (please complete and email the Zondervan Permission Request Form). Other Book Permissions (Trade, Zonderkidz)

Written permission is necessary if you are writing a book or developing a product that uses material or excerpts from a Zondervan publication.

Reverend Fun Permissions

Written permission is necessary if you are writing a book or developing merchandise or creating presentations that uses material or cartoons from Reverend Fun.

Churches/Sunday Schools using less than 50 items, not for resale and for church use only, do not need formal permission.

The following credit line is required on or near the cartoons:

 

Permissions for Disabled and Visually Impaired

*All requests must be submitted from Institutions, Universities or Colleges (not individuals).

  • If you have not already confirmed your eligibility for the Disability Request, confirm visually impaired eligibility at the Library of Congress’ website of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS).
  • Please complete the Disability Request for Electronic Text Form and email to zPermissions [at] zondervan [dot] com. Download the Request for Electronic Text Form
  • Please allow 2 weeks to prepare text.  

 

Permissions for Out-of-print Material

Requesting to re-print or copy entire out-of-print material requires formal permission (fees may apply). Permission to Use Images

All requests are answered as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience, we are currently processing permission grants at about a 4 to 6 week turnaround, this can be expedited for a fee of $150.00 and we will complete this within 2 business days (Please type RUSH in the Subject line of your email).

  • Incomplete permission requests cannot be considered. Please provide all information or request will not be processed.
  • Please do not call regarding your permission request, as that delays the process.
  • Please do not send duplicate requests.
  • We cannot accept requests by telephone or fax.
